Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says will drive economic activity and confidence across New Zealand.
The package combines new and existing funding to create a critical mass of support for major events and tourism, enabling New Zealand to better compete internationally for big acts and large-scale sporting fixtures. Importantly, the fund is now open to concerts, a sector that has previously been excluded from government event investment.
The $70million package includes:
$40 million Events Attraction Package to secure large-scale international events from 2026
$10 million Events Boost Fund to support existing events and attract international opportunities
$10 million Regional Tourism Boost Campaign to incentivise international visitors
$10 million for tourism infrastructure upgrades, including cycle trails
When attending Eventing the Future, NZEA’s annual conference in Hamilton earlier this month, Minister Upston addressed nearly 300 event professionals, emphasising the importance of building strong pipelines for major events and encouraging fresh and innovative pitches. Today’s announcement delivers on that commitment, providing the sector with fresh momentum.
This investment comes at a crucial time, giving the events sector fresh energy and momentum. It will ensure New Zealand can offer international visitors even more reasons to come, experience, and stay longer, while giving Kiwis vibrant concerts, world-class sporting fixtures, and uniquely Kiwi festivals to anticipate and enjoy.
The events industry is a critical pillar of New Zealand’s economy, contributing $44.4 billion annually and supporting 300,000 jobs across the country. NZEA says the new investment will significantly enhance New Zealand’s ability to attract and deliver both major international and homegrown events that generate economic, social, and cultural benefits for communities nationwide.
NZEA General Manager Elaine Linnell is delighted with the announcement.
“This is a fantastic day for our industry. We are delighted the Government has recognised the vital role events play in driving both economic growth and international tourism. The inclusion of concerts is a game-changer, giving parts of our sector that have long missed out on public funding the chance to thrive. Just as importantly, this investment will support our iconic homegrown events and strengthen New Zealand’s ability to secure international acts. This will energise our events landscape and give visitors even more reasons to come to New Zealand, to see more, and to do more.” She says.
NZEA will continue to work closely with government agencies and industry partners to ensure the package delivers maximum impact and helps strengthen New Zealand’s position as a premier destination for world-class events.
