Footprints Waipoua, Manea – Footprints of Kupe, Footprints Waipoua and Awesome Adventures Hokianga have linked up with Copthorne Hotel and The Heads Resort Hokianga to create bespoke events with a view to help business event planners to achieve their goals.
The Hokianga is known as the cradle of Māori nationhood, referring to it being the place where Kupe, New Zealand’s first discoverer, called his home for 40 years. Manea will preserve, communicate and celebrate Kupe’s voyage to Hokianga, his journeys across Aotearoa (New Zealand), his departure, the stories of repopulation and the progression of his descendants. Kupe’s story is one based on over 1,000 years of local Māori history and is the story of the human habitation.
The giant kauri trees of the Waipoua Forest are sentinels for the undiscovered jewel of Northland’s west coast, the historic Hokianga Harbour. Hokianga is unlike anywhere else, remote, spiritual, and untouched.
Manea Footprints of Kupe is an interactive Cultural, Heritage, Tourism and Education Centre in Opononi, Hokianga that is due to open in late 2020. The visitor experience will be 75 minutes in duration and weaves an interactive guided tour through the Centres grounds led by Kupe’s descendants with authentic cultural engagement including protocols, storytelling, waiata (song), karakia (prayers) and culminates in a powhiri (welcome ceremony) and a 20 minute 4D movie and live theatre performance bringing to life his epic journey and the dramatic return voyages of his progenies. Connect deeper with local stories at your leisure courtesy of the technology stations that will be located in the Gallery area and pass the time by enjoying the tranquillity of the outdoor concourse space.
