Hot on the heels of opening a new, $10 million state of the art Sunshine Coast Convention Centre last month, the region has just been named one of the world’s Top7 Intelligent Communities of 2019. Rated by the global Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), the Sunshine Coast shared the global spotlight with communities from Canada, Taiwan and the United States of America.
‘Our Council has set an aspiration for the Sunshine Coast to be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative,’ says Mayor Mark Jamieson.
He said the ICF was particularly impressed by initiatives such as the new international broadband submarine network, which will offer the fastest connectivity between Australia and Asia from 2020, and the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm, which has enabled the Council to offset its entire electricity consumption.
Other current developments include the building of a new, extended runway enabling wide bodied aircraft at the Sunshine Coast Airport, due to open next year, and the ‘clean, green and smart’ dynamic design of the new Maroochydore CBD.
‘We are an incredibly dynamic and diverse community and this international recognition of the Sunshine Coast as a world leader in intelligent communities rightly acknowledges the energy, passion and ideas that we know thrive in our region,’ says Mayor Jamieson.
Meeting Newz wil be running full coverage of the dynamic Sunshine Coast in the next, July/August issue.
