Coupled with a new collaboration for the economic development of Southland, the new flights mean the region is even better placed than ever to carve out a niche in the business events market. New hotels and retail developments, combined with the versatility and variety of existing key venues such as Transport World, ILT stadium and velodrome and the recently refurbished Ascot Park, provide options for many business events. A wee bit further north, Dunedin is seeing several significant projects getting underway to ensure that the city is also a formidable force in the business events sector for many years to come. Advantages for Dunedin in this sector include the combination of the country’s largest and most technologically-advanced training hospitals, one of the country’s biggest universities and New Zealand’s only faculty and school of dentistry. There has also been an increase in beds and meeting space, with Distinction Dunedin Hotel opening The Exchange Room events space earlier this year and the historic Wains Hotel’s transformation into a five-star boutique luxury property with three event spaces catering from 50 –150 delegates.
