Transformation underway at Dunedin's first 5-star hotel

Construction is well underway at one of Dunedin’s most beloved heritage buildings, as the Wains Hotel prepares to become the southern city’s first 5-star boutique hotel by the end of 2019.

The multi-million dollar refurbishment of the 157 year old hotel, owned by CP Group and operated by our management company CPG Hotels, will see the precious design elements of the building carefully preserved including solid stone and  intricate carvings. The hotel will remain open during the redevelopment and measures are being put in place to ensure disruption to guests is minimised.

Boasting 50 rooms over seven floors, the classic luxury seen in the first sneak peek of the lobby area, designed by award-winning studio Yellow6, pays homage to the history of the hotel, city and gold rush era, with rich materials, fabrics and tones. World-class amenities also feature as part of the upgrade, including a new restaurant and bar, gym and meeting facilities.

The new restaurant and bar will be a major attraction for the city with full-view kitchen experience offering a variety of dining options from casual tapas and shared plates through to a full a la carte menu. The hotel ballroom will be receiving a makeover and will be an excellent venue for weddings, functions and meetings, capable of hosting up to 170 people.

Wains Hotel General Manager, Sally Reiber says excitement is growing in Dunedin as construction commences, with anticipation of the first 5-star hotel meeting the demand for upscale accommodation as the city’s visitor numbers continue to grow.

'There is nothing like this hotel in Dunedin and we’re thrilled to be offering a premium, boutique experience to visitors as well as locals. Celebrating the spirit and history of the city, while offering exceptional guest experience, is at the heart of Wains '.

An official opening date for the end of 2019 is yet to be announced.
