Art Works

The construction site of the New Zealand International Convention Centre is in full swing, and Sarah Burlin, NZICC marketing manager, says the team approached the design and build of the convention centre a bit differently.

‘Often delegates come to a city for a convention only. They sit in an artificially lit box and don’t get to see much of the actual city,’ she explains. ‘Our design has so much natural light that it sets us apart from other centres, with views of the city so people can really experience Auckland - which we are really thrilled about.’ The NZICC will adorn two of the largest pieces of public art ever created in New Zealand. Works by Kiwi artists Sara Hughes and Peata Larkin will be installed on the four exterior walls. The two artworks comprise 2,400sqm of glass over 550 panels that wrap around the top level, and 13,500 terracotta tiles that form a spine wall alongside the retail and dining laneway.

‘Our art programme is an opportunity to offer a defining experience of New Zealand. Our design challenges were an opportunity to give delegates an experience they may not get anywhere else in the world.’ The NZICC will be showcasing some of this artwork, along with some of the materials that will be used in the fitout of the building, including walling, carpeting for the centre and new imagery. The NZICC team will are on stand 241.
