International interest fuelling growth for Hawaii Convention Centre

Incentive and conference organisers explored the Hawaii Convention Centre as part of a post-famil in Oahu following the Experience Aloha Business Exchange that took place in June.

The convention centre, located in Waikiki, has four floors, three exhibit halls, a total of 47 meeting rooms, and a ballroom that can host 1500 round table or 2800 theatre style. The ballroom has 10m ceilings and is divisible by three.

Debbie Zimmerman, Hawaii Tourism global MCI, citywide sales liaison, says Oahu as a destination is a top choice for incentive travel and business events, and the convention centre is no exception.

‘Waikiki has that strong urban vibe with its multitude of restaurants, bars and shopping,’ she says. ‘We have venues of historical interest including Pearl Harbour and the Bishop Museum, the Kualoa Ranch movie tours are really popular, and then we've got the country, and the famous North Shore surf beach, the island's cultural experiences at the Polynesian Cultural Centre are ideal for groups and school visits... there’s really something for everyone.’

Zimmerman says the convention centre attracts a lot of scientific events, and interest from Korea for conferences has been surging in the last few years, growing from 171,000 visitors in 2013 t 245,000 in 2016. Visitors from Oceania have also increased, reaching 400,000 visitors in 2016, up from 353,000 in 2013.

‘Our growth potential outside of North America is great. That's why [the event organisers] are here. We want more international travellers.’
