Convene 2017 kicked off this morning with a delicious breakfast held in the Sir Noel Robinson Conference Centre, catered by Austin’s Food Design Events and themed by Event Impressions, followed by a fun pick me up activity led by Team Up Events.
The breakfast was attended by an enthusiastic group of hosted buyers, local buyers and exhibitors.
Lynn Schinella led the breakfast session, ‘Speak and be heard’, which focused on the power of storytelling as a tool to effective communication – whether it’s talking to a prospective client, pitching to a small group or addressing an industry conference.
With an impressive opening that certainly created a reaction amongst the crowd, Schinella said stories are your secret weapon.
‘It’s about the right story, told the right way to right the audience, at the right time,’ she says.
‘Most of our business conversations are designed to get us from one point to another, yet so much of our conversations are bland,’ says Schinella.
‘We have so many automated conversations today that we become a little automated ourselves. How do we keep it fresh? How do we keep people engaged?’
Schinella says that in the business world, storytelling can be frowned upon.
‘Stories are the best way to pitch a vision,’ she says. ‘If you can demonstrate that you’ve done something in the past, you can show people how things work.’
Schinella says stories can help you establish authority, humanise your brand, and persuade, help with change, and inspire trust.
‘Stories show that you can be vulnerable,’ she adds.
Schinella will also lead the first Jet Park Convene Seminar Session later this morning, from 11am.
