US NZ event for Christchurch
Government, business and community leaders from the United States and New Zealand will attend the fourth US NZ Partnership Forum in Christchurch from February 20 to 22, 2011. The announcement of the host city was made in Washington recently at the AGM of the US NZ Council. Over 100 attendees are expected to discuss how the expanding relationship between the two countries can be further enhanced. Executive director of the NZ US Council Stephen Jacobi says the forum has met three times since 2006 - twice in Washington and once in Auckland. 'The forum has successfully established new momentum and provided an important platform for both governments to take it to a whole new level,' he says.

Archer on target with events
Image Kylie Archer is the new manager for the New Zealand Major Events team.  Archer has returned to Wellington after five years with SKYCITY Auckland, most recently as head of marketing.   Part of the Ministry of Economic Development, New Zealand Major Events aims to retain, grow and attract major events that complement New Zealand’s image, existing infrastructure and achieve a greater contribution to economic growth.  Along with providing advice on the development and implementation of the government’s major events strategy and administration of the Major Events Development Fund, Major Events will review options for a new National Business Events Strategy.

Expressions of interest sought for growing New Zealand's market share
The Ministry of Economic Development (MED) is interested in hearing a wide range of views about how to increase the number and size of business events that take place in New Zealand, including which elements of the current arrangements need to improve so New Zealand can be more competitive on the world stage.
Specifically MED is seeking views from interested parties on:
•  the development of a National Business Events Strategy
•  how the current network of convention venues can be strengthened
•  establishing a national convention and exhibition centre.
Hosting large scale business events has the potential to deliver considerable economic benefits to New Zealand but at the moment the country is missing out on these. People in the business events industry can contribute ideas by responding to the 'Expression of Interest for Growing New Zealand’s share of the international Business Events Market and Strengthening the National Network of Convention Venues' on www.gets.govt.nz or by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to request a copy of the ‘Expression of Interest’ document. Responses close 5pm Friday, 18 June 2010.

'Media scrum' won't help cause
Conventions & Incentives New Zealand (CINZ) and others in the business events arena are worried about a possible 'media scrum' developing around the subject of a national convention centre and possibly alienating the general public before the latest case can be put. Alan Trotter, chief executive of CINZ, says the Minister of Economic Development, Gerry Brownlee has had three meetings on the subject (one in each of Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland) and that the ministry is now asking for submissions on the subject. These will all be looked at and considered, before a decision is made in September on which way to progress. 'A robust process is underway and then a sensible and measured decision will be made,' says Trotter. 'It is the way this issue should be handled.'

Trotter fears that recent publicity in the New Zealand Herald emanating from Auckland City Council may result in misinformation and figures bandied about which could quickly put the public offside. 'I am concerned that the publicity could start to get hysterical in the way that it did around the cruise terminal - that process was hijacked, with too many people who didn't really know the situation getting too much air time.' Trotter says the current submission process is one of the biggest opportunities the industry has had and people with ideas and interests should engage in the process rather than putting their views through the media at this time. He points out that the current Auckland City Council 'will not even exist' in a few months. Many people in the tourism and events industry back Trotter's stance. At the recent Hotel Industry Conference in Auckland, one delegate told Meeting Newz 'there seems to be an agenda (with the publicity) but nobody knows what it is.'
