The direct Wellington – Canberra flights operated by

Singapore Airlines are opening up new opportunities

for both association and corporate business events,

says Canberra Convention Bureau director of

marketing and communications, Giselle Radulovic.

There is more than one

are also in the city’s sights.

‘We are talking to Singapore Airlines about how

we can bring individual decision makers here.

There are a lot of pre-conceptions about Canberra

but things have really changed over here in the

last five years. Once we get people here and show

them around, we often write business as a result.’

Canberra will be at PAICE for the first time

this year, prompted by the new flight.

‘We’ll

culture and influence; our innovation and

research hubs, our universities and our other

tertiary institutions.’

She says academics like to meet in Canberra

not only to exchange ideas with their peers but

because it is an ideal environment in which to

raise issues and policy positions and to seek

funding and approval for innovative projects.

‘This a place people can invest in, visit and

study in.’

Radulovic says Canberra has a number of funky

and interesting hotels, such as the JamalaWildlife

Lodge – an African style lodge set in zoo grounds.

Other options include QT Canberra, Hotel

Hotel, The Little National, and the ‘super funky’

East Hotel. For those seeking international and

recognised brands, Canberra has names such as

Crowne Plaza, Hyatt and Novotel.

‘Traditionally Canberra has attracted a lot

of national association meetings,’ Radulovic

says. ‘Now we will be able to expand into the

Australasian associations and have much more

of an ANZ

focus.We

will also be able to reach out

to Kiwis to boost delegate numbers. We think

it puts Canberra in contention for conferences

that it probably wouldn’t have been considered

for in the past.’
