And New Zealand will win when New Zealanders win. earning the lasting trust and respect of her clients.’ Miriam’s particular passion and specialty was government-hosted international conferences, which she delivered with diplomacy, sensitivity, creative flair and good humour. Tonkin says in losing Miriam, the Australasian conference industry has lost one of its most talented conference professionals, working at the top of her game. ‘We at The Conference Company, and our wider community of clients and industry partners, have lost a great colleague and friend. She will be deeply missed.’ Miriam’s funeral was held in Wellington  on Friday 5 October. I went to a presentation by Kiwi entrepreneur Robett Hollis recently and it really struck a chord. Hollis is on a self- imposed mission to destroy New Zealand’s tall poppy syndrome, and it got me thinking about our industry. Why are we unable to celebrate success? Why aren’t we brave enough to do more? If we’re going to keep up with the exponential growth that’s forecast, and if we’re going to get more people to see tourism and business events as a viable long-term career, we’re going to need to start championing ourselves better. As an industry it seems we’re really good at talking but not so good at implementing, and as Hollis rightly puts it ‘ideas are shit, execution is everything’. The lack of good leadership in our world today is what’s going to stop us from progressing. We need to be bigger and louder. We need to tell our story, and inspire others to create Miriam was 57 and died at home with family around her. Jan Tonkin, director of The Conference Company, says Miriam was an exceptional conference manager. ‘We were so proud and lucky to have her on our team. She was adored by clients, suppliers and the many others whom she worked alongside – and kept in line – with her characteristic blend of composure, charm, determination, eagle-eyed attention to detail and sense of fun. ‘She has been a mainstay of The Conference Company since our founding in 1990. ‘We were only a few months old when Miriam became the third member of the team, quickly mastering the complexities and demands of conference management and ‘New Zealand is the land of average.’ Conference industry mourns loss of Miriam Wilkins [ EDITOR IAL / NEWS Aleisha Moore Editor Miriam Wilkins, longtime head of The Conference Company’s Wellington office, passed away on 2 October 2018 after a short illness, following surgery to investigate a brain tumour in June.
