Lexie Matheson, programme leader of
event management programmes in the School
of Hospitality & Tourism, says a key to the
original bid was a commitment to having
event students running the conference. They
will have four experienced event managers
working with them.
This is the first time the Asia Pacific
CHRIE (Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and
Institutional Education) Conference is being
held in New Zealand. It will be at the ANZ
Viaduct Events Centre, is expected to attract
300 to 350 delegates and will include
Associate Minister of Tourism Paula Bennett
as a keynote speaker. Other speakers include
Krishna Botica of the Restaurant Association
and Simon Milne, Professor of Tourism at
AUT and director of the New Zealand Tourism
Research Institute.
There will be 170 presentations of new
research from countries including New
Zealand, Australia, China and Hong Kong,
Taiwan, Philippines, and Korea.
Matheson says 11 AUT students are taking
responsibility for managing the event. Six
students will be handling aspects of the
event such as the welcome function and gala
dinner, while five are working on the logistic
management of the conference.
Each of those 11 has a group of nine
working with them.
The event is using Events Air software.
Fittingly, there will be a CHRIE Youth
Conference running alongside the main
event. Held on June 11 and 12 it is open
to all undergraduate students and will
focus on various aspects of education,
training and academic development for
the hospitality and tourism industry. The
youth conference will allow students with
different cultural backgrounds to interact,
discuss and exchange ideas, knowledge and
practical skills.
