Confirmation thatWellingtonCityCouncil isnegotiating towards
thedevelopment of apurposebuilt convention centreandfive
star hotel for theCBDhasbeenwelcomedby industry leaders.
There is concern, however, that thenew facilitywill comewitha
cost; thedemiseof theheritage-listedWellingtonTownHall.
Councillor Jo Coughlan, chair of the
Economic Growth and Arts Committee, has
told Meeting Newz that convention centre
discussions are well underway.
‘Council is quite a way down the track in
termsofnegotiationwithadeveloper, forboth
a purpose-built convention centre and hotel.
It’s all very exciting.We can’t discuss the site

is really positive about the potential for the
development; it’s about future-proofing our
ability to host conventions. We need to be
