The train journey through Australia’s
outback country is operated by Great
Southern Railway Limited, with the Ghan’s
name being an abbreviated version of the
original, The Afghan Express. This title
honours pioneering Afghan camel drivers
who arrived in Australia in the late 19th
century to help find a way to the country’s
unexplored interior.
Top End update
Five-star beachside hotel casino operator
SKYCITY has opened Darwin’s first world-
class luxury resort. The A$40 million resort
at Mindil Beach, only minutes from the
Darwin CBD, opened in early August and
includes 32 luxury guestrooms, two super
villas, a swim-up bar, restaurant and an
Asian-style endota day spa. The resort
complex houses a large tropical lagoon
swimming pool with its own 30 metre
white sand beach.
The entire 32 rooms can be taken up for
a group booking which would also permit
exclusive access to the lagoon beach for
an al fresco function. This accommodation
complements the hotel’s existing 120 rooms.
The property can also accommodate small
meetings with the resort boardroom seating 12.
A permanent, air-conditioned outdoor
structure is to be erected on the SKYCITY
lawns overlooking Mindil Beach. This
facility, which will cater exclusively for social
functions, will be set up at the southern end
of the lawns and will provide an all-year,
all-weather facility for up to 600 diners in
a banquet-style format. A glass wall and
verandah area will open out to the beachside.
It is expected that this new facility will be
available early in the new year.
In defence of Darwin
The new A$10 million Defence of Darwin
Experience is the first facility in Australia
to provide an immersive, interactive,
multimedia experience about Darwin’s role
in World War II. Its opening earlier this year
coincided with the 70th anniversary of the
bombing of Darwin and visitors have the
chance to understand the impact of the war
on Darwin and its inhabitants, both civilian
and military.
The attraction is located next to the
Darwin Military Museum at East Point, a
short journey from the Darwin CBD. Visiting
groups can combine the two venues to view
the displays and exhibition. Various outdoor
venues can take groups of up to 500 guests
and the grounds include unique features such
as the Gun Emplacement area and the Sidney
Williams hut, a type of corrugated iron shed
used during the war.
SilkAir in the NT
International flights into the Top End of
the Northern Territory now include Singapore
Airlines’ regional full-service premium
airline, SilkAir, which launched a new dual-
class, four-times-weekly service for the four-
hour flight between Singapore and Darwin.
